I'm also curious if this will be parallel to a discussion about gender, if the idea is that "succubi are to men what men are to women:" they want to have sex with you and can overpower you if you refuse.
It's still early to know and I think this will be more of a romantic comedy, but the author has a history of going places with some concepts (indepently of the quality of the execution). Like maybe we will see what made the succubi give up their old ways for a more civilized coexistence and how maybe some of them don't accept that and will excuse their behavior on the romantiziced tales they tell to themselves about a glorious past or some typical bullshit these kinds of opportunists say.

That's really interesting, because my read was like 180 degrees from that: This series has seemed to me not just socially conscious but about social consciousness so far, using fictional/mythical races as a way to safely talk about real-world issues in the way that sci-fi and fantasy often do.

I'm really not getting ecchi or fanservice from this as much as that it's supposed to be threatening (but not too scary.) Might accidentally hit for people who are, uh, into that sorta thing, but I'm not getting a vibe that it's intentional? The cliffhanger totally reads "they will be immediately interrupted next chapter or she'll reveal to him that she's only trying to make a point or something" but maybe it'll be subverted, who knows?

I can see this going all sorts of directions, including like you said, which is honestly rare. Maybe I'm giving it way too much credit.

Reading back over the first three chapters, I guess I can see where you're coming from, in terms of the content of their interactions and the language they use both internally with themselves and externally with one another/other people.
I think where I'm getting caught up is the succubus/supernatural entity element, surprisingly. But as you pointed out, sci-fi and fantasy are often used to create 'safe' lenses through which heavier topics can be explored, so Emu being a succubus here fits that bill if the author truly wants to push into that territory with these characters and their relationship.

I think the ecchi angle I'm seeing is also my expectation borne out by the fact that the female lead is a succubus. That choice right there over something like a tengu or yuki-onna or straight up oni means there's bound to be a sexual component, and I would be very surprised if that wasn't leaned into in the story in surface-level ways, as we can see by her friend pushing him down on the infirmary bed with intent to (by appearances) 'devour him'.
It could be this is all being set up for a big subversion that never crosses the line into lewd moments for the main pair, but it's a big hangup between them and their prospective relationship, so I'm hard-pressed to see how it won't become a factor. And we already have little bits and pieces to this point of him checking her out in this panel or that, even if it's "unintentionally", so there's definitely a fanservice element in how Emu is portrayed by the manga itself, even if (again) it's for deeper purposes related to her character and her actual narrative arc.
It's not just one thing all on its own for the sake of visual titillation, basically.

That all said - I too want to be a more optimistic person when it comes to new stories, so I really want to give this as much credit as you are. I also just tend to be very cynical a lot of the time due to .....gestures broadly at everything so I could do to remember to be a bit more whimsical at times, I think.

Might drop this shit if she doesn’t face any actual consequences for attempted rape, like the complete fracturing of her friendship for being a disgusting rapist at the bare minimum. Otherwise I know this is just gonna turn into another losers goon fantasy about how being assaulted is fine actually ffs

Can't blame you for being tired of everything, but at some point you have to let go or everything just sours. She might be just envious of Emu for some reason and wants to fuck with her a little but things don't go as she planned with Hayato and has to up the ante but she is just a total virgin who doesn't know what to do and everything explodes in her face. Not the first time that has happened in a manga.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? IM SO CONFUSED?
He's a pure soul who's trying to treat succubi as equal and not as sex objects for their own sake, similar to a feminist.

There's a stereotype of male feminist activists using that either to look better for women they like, or to get nearer to women they can prey on. And then they get put on the sex offender registry.
I dunno either, but I'm also pretty confident I'm happier that way. Just sayin'.
And now you know :02:

I mean, MC goes on and on about diversity, etiquette, respect, he overthinks these things a lot, tries his best, gets quite arrogant about it, and actually seems like the only person who cares this much about it.
Then he gets in trouble, blindsided by his own tolerance in the most stereotypical encounter, which includes the use of an ability succubi shouldn't be using. Makes me wonder how seriously the author is going to tackle the outcome, if at all.
Maybe it's author's lesson that stereotypes exist for a reason and that by focusing so much on "Look, I don't discriminate! I'm one of the good ones!" he lowered his guard and got jumped on by one of the very same people he was so 'non-prejudiced' about.

Ah the whole performative male thing

I think you're projecting a bit here. Everything in the writing points the other way.

I love the art in this, wish it went harder on the ecchi
T

That's attempted rape. I hope she faces legal consequences. She probably won't.
What legal consequences? The ruling in Hoshizaki v. Mukai et al. makes her actions completely within the bounds of the law.

Or is she just horny for her friend's crush?
This one. Her friend found a guy she likes, so she wants to see what the fuss is about.

Oh no, a cliffhanger. Kind of a shame we'll never find out what it is she'd do next.
I believe mean "who" not "what".

Ah yes, the rich legal text that is the body of work of Japan's foremost jurist, Hiroyuki.
This one. Her friend found a guy she likes, so she wants to see what the fuss is about.
Yeah, I assumed people were joking when they were curious or taking this "seriously," because the entire first half of the last chapter was Emu telling this girl and two other succubus friends that she finally found a 3D guy she wanted to be with... but he's "not good with lewd things!" What do?! And the friends basically look at each other in silent unison like "Oh our sweet dumb baby bean is totally getting taken in by some deceitful playboy. No fucking way a human man claims to hate ecchi but hangs out with and charms a succubus like us."

The obvious read is that she's testing him to protect her friend. Runner up, she's the kind of girl who like to take others' toys.

Honestly took awhile for the manga to do something with the Succubi premise. Until now it feels like it wasn't really a factor in the story.
I was literally thinking at the start of the chapter that the whole succubus thing hasn't really seemed to matter. Katou is just a hot girl otaku. So I'm really glad we're getting something where being a succubus actually means something. I wonder how many people know succubi can paralyse humans. Certainly reverses the usual dynamic of men overpowering women and raping them. In this world, succubi can be the predators and rapists.
