The tone of the series up to this point feels entirely too flippant to suddenly shift gears into "the question of consent & ethics in the context of sexual relations with supernatural entities with a sex-centric mythology", but I guess anything is technically possible.
I'd also be impressed if the author went that route, but mostly because this feels way too lighthearted, even with this sudden assault scene, to go into the sort of heavy topic that sexual consent involves, much less when dealing with something like sex demons.
Kinda feels like the author wanted an ecchi scene but Emu is too pure/timid to pull it off, so another character had to be introduced to enact it with the MC. And it couldn't be Emu with some playboy-type, because that would piss off readers who want Emu's purity left intact (blech at writing that out, but it's not my first day reading manga, so).
I hope this is setting up something of real substance, but I'll be over here not-holding my breath.
That's really interesting, because my read was like 180 degrees from that: This series has seemed to me not just socially conscious but
about social consciousness so far, using fictional/mythical races as a way to safely talk about real-world issues in the way that sci-fi and fantasy often do.
I'm really not getting ecchi or fanservice from this as much as that it's supposed to be threatening (but not
too scary.) Might accidentally hit for people who are, uh, into that sorta thing, but I'm not getting a vibe that it's intentional? The cliffhanger totally reads "they will be immediately interrupted next chapter or she'll reveal to him that she's only trying to make a point or something" but maybe it'll be subverted, who knows?
I can see this going all sorts of directions, including like you said, which is honestly rare. Maybe I'm giving it way too much credit.
As a side note, Emu's mix of confidence in what she wants, pluckiness, and clumsy purity is kinda growing on me. I know that when I write it out like that, it's like "oh you mean every heroine ever?" but there's something about the ratio in her that makes me want to root for her
extra.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? IM SO CONFUSED?
I dunno either, but I'm also pretty confident I'm happier that way. Just sayin'.
