Funny part is that this kinda thing is addressed in Sword Reincarnation by the Dwarven blacksmiths.
They enchant the armour to "coat" the user's body with a defensive field.
The "exposed" skin areas are actually just as strong as the armoured areas, and serve as decoys / traps for an enemy to target.
