The huge revelation might seem like an asspull but it makes perfect sense from the beginning. Guts has always fought in the treshold between this world and world of the dead, and one of the first things we were told is that he was born from a dead mother.

He was always in the treshold, he was literally born from it. The brand didn't drag him into the treshold, but simply returned him there. If there is a man who can beat Griffith whose powers come from the treshold, it's him. He can't just give up.

I think it's less that he doesn't recognize her and more that he's in a bit of mental turbulence and "oh hey it's that witch lady, nice to see you" is less prominent in his head than "good lord what is happening, who am I, what am I"

I give it another 15~25 years before we get well developed AI tools that can be used to animate Miura style drawings and have a proper studio that can pull off the animation & direction.

Just a bit of a theme reaffirmation for the last Arc it seems?
Cuz yeah, Guts is a threshold human, more fate-wise than being another species or something. This was always a thing, with him seeing supernaturals and all that.

I don't see none of this taking away from Guts himself or his bonds, his efforts, his story. Mostly seems like a compartimentalizing of it.
Just the way griffith was born in filth but wanted to cross the threshold to ascend (even if his dream was kind of simple, and God Hand sorta amped it to eleven and he rolled with it). While guts never wished to cross, he was aimless, until he met his comrades.

And I'm not sure, but isn't every soul from the Spiritual Realm? And then is born in the Material Realm through pregnancy? Don't know if this has been spoken of.

But it was a cool scene with Guts being shocked back to life, and taking his "first breath" like a baby.

We got hints of that very early on. Remember when Guts's life was saved when he befriended an small flower spirit.

That was way before the time when he got into the Band of the Hawk. He could probably always see into the supernatural.

This was something in the back of my mind for years... how Guts was able to survive being born, because... that was not a healthy birth in any shape.

All the shit this guy has dealt with... yeah, it actually makes sense that he is someone who is of both sides since birth.

And I will put this here as a reminder... this is Mori-sensei doing the world a favor by posthumously completing his friend's story... yes, it feels different, but there is simply NO way around it, and this IS the only way this story will have the end it deserves.
