No and no. The anime just chose to do an open-to-interpretation ending because it kinda had to if it wanted to adapt at that pace (perfectly reasonable choice to make imo.) Won't say too much since it'd be way too long to explain in details (it's an entire volume worth of content!)

Now that both pairs are actively in the story at the same time, I apparently actually have to pay attention to their nicknames. I was super confused how it jumped from them talking about how to deal with their replicas with the girl who lost hers, to them going to bed and admitting to the other friend they themselves were replicas.

Hopefully this goes past the anime wnding because i found it unsatisfying. Even as someone who didn't read the LN i could tell they just had to make something that resembles an ending because they had to fit it in 13 episodes

Episode 5 in the anime actually made me switch back to the manga instead, as the anime adaptation lacked the psychological vibes of the manga adaptation.

So I really appreciate that this series is being scanlated again.

Reading this after the anime ends and after I read Volume 4 of the LN made me feel things I can't quite put into words. Well anyway, I can't wait to see the manga to finally reach LN V4! I'm also curious to see whether the manga would continue to adapt past V4 or not

You can re-read Chapter 2 to refresh on The Little Mermaid Returns. Or re-read from the beginning right until before Ryou appeared, it's like the central theme of the first LN volume.
