Her problem is that she doesn't HAVE an instinct for "defeating someone". With irl experience, the most normal image would be tasing or pepper spraying someone, but she clearly never had to do that before.

I feel like a lot of people would have a lot of an easier time imaging (since they might very well have seen it) lightning splitting a tree than how to conjure up pepper spray.

Thinking about it, I doubt a lot of people have actually seen what happens when you pepper spray someone for real or taser them outside of TV-shows.

Also both your options are things people use to avoid causing permanent harm, she has no reason to do that. Rather she would want more firepower since that is safer, going for non-lethal is the act of an OP bullshit MC.
