God. That sudden "うっそ-" got me so bad when it was first uploaded. The sudden change in Tomikawa's tone and demeanor, the way she suddenly started swapping out energy levels. I know bipolar is an overused diagnosis for fictional characters but Tomikawa at times really does show signs of being low-key manic (and of course, unmedicated).
Bits aside, Hiiragi does exhibit all the energy of someone who has spent her life assuming she'll be dead by 18. Is it that she's "not very smart" or has she spent every year assuming she'll kill herself eventually, and so has never thought to waste time studying...? Lily does understand this feeling.
Tomikawa might not understand this, assuming only Tomikawa has revealed her home life to Hiiragi, and not vice-versa...
I think we're unfortunately seeing the codependency really take root. You're right that Hiiragi has assumed she'll be dead by 18, but also remember she spent her formative years alternating abuse and living off scraps of trash. Even assuming best case scenario that she didn't receive any lasting brain damage from her physical abuse, she can't have had much time to study and really focus on her studies. Tomikawa is unfortunately embracing a bit more of her mother's abuse, I feel; "why can't you just spend more time studying like I do? Why can't you just love me as much as I love you?
why do you make me treat you like this?
I want the best for these girls. I really do. I'm hoping that Hiiragi's upcoming arc in the JP chapters leads to them talking things out more.
OH GOD we got something worse than black/white pages
This actually threw me bad when I was following the twitter updates, because unshaded/uncolored pages usually meant fanbox bonus comics and whatnot. So I wasn't sure if this was a main update or not, until I looked and realized oh this is absolutely a continuation of the previous update.
Yeah, I feel like Tomikawa wouldn't have responded like this if she was in her glossy/"shaded" eyes mode.
I decided yesterday to do a lil cross-comparison of Tomikawa's eyes and expressions from the early chapters to the most recent updates on JP twitter. It definitely paints a picture when you see them all lined up.
