Like they were totally fine putting up with being slaves for the "spirit tamer" guy with the elemental equivalent of shock collars, when they could have ganged up on him at any time. It's only being commanded to fight against Univas that finally makes them go "wait huh this sucks actually" and beat the shit out of him with no difficulty whatsoever. And it's obvious this gaggle of random no-name spirits are not going to tag along with Univas and the group, so we've had this whole song and dance and are going to move on like nothing happened because for all intents and purposes nothing happened.

Remember, spirits love humans.

They do, though we can see they only tolerate so much. These spirits obviously hated being treated like slaves by the "spirit tamer" guy, which I would be fine with if that wasn't how every single spirit has been treated by the general populace other than Univas. This is the normal behavior for decades (likely centuries), but the spirits have been really inconsistent with whether they roll over and take it, or get unruly and fight back.

I fully realise I'm just making this up with no evidence but...I'd guess that spirits built into mechanisms as part of the metal like the collars are generally just fulfilling their role.

I'd assume it would take a tonne of "spirit energy" to even communicate with them otherwise the spirits themselves would ask them to come off.

Like I'm willing to bet that there's probably air spirits that just move around without being able to communicate with any people but I bet Univas could ask them to do something crazy like create a tornado if he wanted when generally they just go with the flow.

But as I said that's just cope & based off everyone saying it was impossible & then Tifon saying Univas had more spirit power than anyone.

The only way to fully enjoy this kind of series is to treat it as an unintentional comedy: Univas continuing to fail upwards as he either treats the spirits with common decency while asking for help, or does absolutely nothing while all of his cartoonishly evil enemies lose. Dude just wanted to go on a roadtrip to fix his wooden horse, yet everywhere he goes he ends up being treated like some huge celebrity or the next Messiah.

It seems like the spirits as a whole have a very weird will, remember that the wind girl was the Hero´s bride and that he made her do a lot of awful stuff, it was just the appearance of Univas that made her say "nope" and run away.

Taking the artifacts behavior or the one spirit at the beach, they have some sort of free will, but it does not reach a full denial of an order, it just gets to "doing things reluctantly"... like the big turtle said, that they endure humans because they love their "children"... if we take this in all seriousness, it seems like pain and death are not that big of a deal for spirits. Maybe Univas has the power to give spirits full free will and the spirits just adore him for that.

...We could also say that the author has some interesting fetishes and it is leaking hard into the story.

Could be fun that Univas now has a small squad following him, but spirits themselves seem to also like this hierarchy of "who goes with him".

Feels a bit odd that the collars apparently always used the wearers weakness, yet were comprised of just gold spirits? Gold spirits can use every element then? Given the power surging through it was always black, would have been more reasonable that it was a singular type, along the lines of curse.
