Thankfully it's just another "cultural showcase", because I had always been uncomfortable whenever Kariya tries to act like an expert on ethnic food from another culture.

Dude has been unreliable about even Japanese things, it just seems hella wrong for him to pretend to be an authority in other things.

I need Australian bros to confirm on the ant eating.
Not Australian but it seems about right

Finally, a draw I can actually be happy with! Although probably a big part in that is that the author didn't have Yuzan speechify about how the Ultimate Menu really lost but managed a draw by playing on the judges' hearts. But no, there was mutual respect, Yuzan kept his mouth shut, and it didn't feel like Yamaoka and crew only managed the draw because of what Yuzan told them, since it's not like they were going to present Aboriginal food without touch-ups if Yuzan hadn't said anything. Not bad! More chapters like this, and I wouldn't be so frustrated with this manga.

There is and interesting perception for Japanese fans that kariya changing stance as year by pass...

When first release, kariya is more attuned to yamaoka..

But later years, he more attuned with yuzan..

Ants is also eaten in South East Asia too. I had ant sticky rice a bunch of times. They taste pretty good. Anyway this is one of the culture showcase. Pretty cool

I did note that when they bring up up examples of Indigenous people being pushed out of their territory's, maybe its because I have recently wrapped Golden Kamuy, but noticeable to not mention the Ainu. (Likewise being Swedish, I am well aware theres a long and complicated history there with the Sami people.)

Also was on my mind because that manga showcases the Ainu culture has a rich food culture (ALOT of stews, naturally). I do wonder if we we will see Kariya tackle that down the line.

But as is, it was nice to have a draw where it felt like both sides were genuinely ok with the outcome.

Probably my favourite arc (no bias at all growing up and learning about First Nations culture here), I don't think I've ever seen a piece of visual media so thoroughly acknowledge and explore the type of cuisine belonging to them like Oishinbo.
