If I remember correctly, they’re supposed essentially be imperial Germany with Japanese ships, but with American radars

Fun fact, the mishtals are using jets among other things.
They just.. aren’t building them properly because nobody actually knows the physics behind the magical equivalent of a jet engine

I guess that's one justification why they tried to do level bombing, which was learned very quickly by everyone who tried it as the worst way to attack naval targets. It was almost too on the nose for the Valkas to demonstrate how good they are at war by stating the correct tactics.

Here you can really see the biggest advantage being in actual war brings - innovation.

Gra Valkas being superpower and probably waging a ton of wars in their homeworld led to them having developed strategies like having torpedos and land mines. Poor Milishial might have magic advantage but compared to battle tested things it cannot hold candle to Gra Valkas.

But of boy... are they going to be surprised when they go agaisnt modern Japanese airforce and navy.

The battleship being featured is definitely the British WWII King George V. It had a rather distinctive 4 + 2 gun turret arrangement in the front, which I don't think was used by any other battleship.

And since they rely only on whatever Ravernal artifact they dig up, they have no idea about sea mines, torpedoes, or submarines. Heck, during the Liberation of Leifor, the newly formed Death Bar Fleet, with its new ships, especially the Orichalcum-class Guided Missile Battleship Cosmo, despite the Milishials having guided magic missiles already, still didn't develop their own magic mines and magic torpedoes and had to rely on the JMSDF's new Maya Aegis destroyer and the 1st Escort Flotilla to clear the sea mines in Leifor and the Gra Valkan submarines and destroyers that are still lurking in the area
