The author seems to be trying very hard to create a "morally grey" system of slavery, based from what I could glance on historical debt slavery and corvée systems, and as a form of "constructive punishment". From what they mentioned in previous chapters, the idea for Ivy seems to be that if you broke a law, committed a crime or fell into debt you couldn't pay back, you would be sentenced into a slavery contract to render labour for whomever bought your rights (something that resembles a mix of corvée and debt slavery). You would thus render compulsory work to your title holder, as opposed to serving a prison sentence.
Of course, the caveat seems to be that since magic contracts exist, the rights of the slave, and the services they must render would be documented and clearly outlined. How this would stop powerful folk from using female slaves as broodmares, or exploit deliberately vague wording, is not at all explained (yet).

it's like the artist has a very hard time conveying the characters and story moving forward, plus some name changes and honestly i'm super lost on everything that happened until now.

Stars refer to any and every skill, not just magic. Calculus, trigonometry, sewing, fletching, trap setting, swordplay, gardening, and so on. It doesn't determine that you can only do those things (like, nobody is walking around with "advanced breathing, basic digestion, etc. skills) but it does function like natural talent. And in the MC's case, or for all we know in other regions too it is looked at pretty conservatively as an indicator of what you should be in your life.

glad the story finally moves on. this arc had too many characters, good, bad and those inbetween, for me. i hope the next one will be easier on the numbers.

meanwhile, i wonder if stars might just be a limiter in actuality so her being starless means something on the lines of being not limited at all.
