But that’s the thing. Even she acknowledges that he essentially already confessed. There’s no other sensible interpretation of what he said.

The only thing that I can think of is that her bad personality is to blame. She likes him but she does still see him as “below” her, so she feels like she can just sit back and wait. That way she can maintain the dominant position in the relationship.
