totally doesn't read like that to me - they reads more like a person that doesn't care about their gender, rather than trans, they just wants his crush to like thembefore i was broadly fine with where ever the series but after this chapter i think im at "if momiji doesnt actually transition by the end then this manga sucks" lol. like theres still the open space for this to be a "well maybe this is about loving urself (read:ur assigned gender at birth) and u shouldnt change urself!!!" type story, but the thing is like at this point momiji is experiencing transphobia from other students and wants to keep dressing as a girl anyways, so at a certain point u gotta call a duck a duck. and if momiji decides at the end to remain a boy then like. well I guess all this was for nothing.
How? Even if they don;t transition then it doesn't mean its a basic "het cis" romance. Its still queer no matter how you look at it. Being queer means you don't belong in the het cis norm. Kouyou/Momiji might be bigender or a demiboy.before i was broadly fine with where ever the series but after this chapter i think im at "if momiji doesnt actually transition by the end then this manga sucks" lol. like theres still the open space for this to be a "well maybe this is about loving urself (read:ur assigned gender at birth) and u shouldnt change urself!!!" type story, but the thing is like at this point momiji is experiencing transphobia from other students and wants to keep dressing as a girl anyways, so at a certain point u gotta call a duck a duck. and if momiji decides at the end to remain a boy then like. well I guess all this was for nothing.
Eh yea i was being glib when I wrote that, my main point tho is that there's like still space for this story to be "he needs to learn to love himself and not change himself for the one he loves" instead of a story about any form of queerness which would imo flatly suck. mangas rn in a weird balancing act between future possibilities; in a real way, the central tension of the story (at least for me) is whether or not its actually gonna let momiji be queerHow? I think its more transphobic to think that trans people must transition when gender is very complex. Sometimes transition can just be clothes, hair, or the little things. It always breaks my heart how the trans community have so many rules in what is "trans" when we already outcasts in the norm of society. Why put these rules in this manga too?
But that isn’t really the issue here though. Manga publishers have rules around what kinds of trans things can be displayed in manga. How? Right now, a lot of queer manga are not to go too much in queerness due to the political climate and paypal being a jackass. There was something about all GL being censored recently in Japan too. Might be related to it....Eh yea i was being glib when I wrote that, my main point tho is that there's like still space for this story to be "he needs to learn to love himself and not change himself for the one he loves" instead of a story about any form of queerness which would imo flatly suck. mangas rn in a weird balancing act between future possibilities; in a real way, the central tension of the story (at least for me) is whether or not its actually gonna let momiji be queer
I don’t particularly thing that the gender expression is here isn’t even that complex. We have a character who’s dressing femme, wanting to be seen as a girl when dressed as one, tried to casually bring up wanting to presenting more feminine to their friends and getting push back. This all reads as trans femme. They even choose a new name.
There isn’t some new gender discourse ever really being generated in these kinds of mangas, it’s inherently obfuscated because they’re not allowed to talk about it in most cases.
i was wondering when Momiji/Kouyou discourse would turn into Boy from Venus discourse. guess we're here.I think its more transphobic to think that trans people must transition when gender is very complex. As much as I want to agree with you with how manga is; part of me disagrees because the gender is complex here. We are seeing pages in what makes the fmc's heart flutter. When she was checking out the other girls in the locker room to see that it was bodies she wasn't attracted to.
Plus, its teenagers. Imagine being a teenager going through your own gender and sexuality confusion. You are thinking in the brain of an adult instead of a teenager.
Non binary and non gender conforming ARE a transgender experience. Always.totally doesn't read like that to me - they reads more like a person that doesn't care about their gender, rather than trans, they just wants his crush to like them
