I think the intention was that she was trying to kill herself with the falling pillars from the other side of the school, so that her family wouldn't rouse any suspicion.
Frankly, I suspect that her family were duped and used as pawns, and that the kingdom that helped them were actually using them to their own ends (beyond just asking them to help stop a possible war).

The Boss feels like a bit of a moron. I had suspected the reason he sent her to the school was to learn to socialise a bit, and fix her up a little. So to act surprised that she's done just that, not only shows that he hadn't sent her to the school with such intention, but he doesn't want such outcomes at all -- which to me, is an incredibly moronic move.
Yeah, surprise, she made friends while at school... who could have seen this coming?... moron.
