Well it was canceled in the very next volume. It's possible that things had to move very fast at this point because the author was told in advance they were getting the axe. When a manga is rushed, everything ends up falling apart.

About the joke spanning the bottom of page 7 and the top of page 8... it made perfect sense with Japanese grammar, but given how awkward it sounds in English, it might've been better to translate the start of that joke as "about the dresser's..." instead of "in the dresser's...", so it matches a...

A lot of us in the comment section called out that it seemed to be what the author was gunning for since the police interview. Not to say I thought it was 100% definitely this that was going on, but it's not exactly a shocking twist--the author hinted at it very deliberately.
