I think the rank system is bs. In any other world that is not fully transparent the guilds would just assume that he is a higher rank. Ranks were not really explained yet, other than higher means better. Also what are levels, does everyone have them or do they only have ranks?

I think it does not hard counter melee, only normal things. For the stuff bought from the shop he likely has to either upgrade the ability or it takes more time/energy to transform it.
