It was probably to also help sell the "This is a fictional world where science can basically do what we need it to" idea early on. It also helps from having to repeat the same "Oh, I'm naked and so embarrassed" bit every time they grow.

This chapter's was surprisingly different. Even the chapter title didn't follow the "Exclamation! Statement." format. Considering it's called "The Greatest Story in the World," my theory is that this guy is parallel/future Giraffe and that his tale was epic.
