He seemed truly evil in the start of the manga, but he was a literal child then. Younger than Sei, and 6 years have passed since then. Getting his ass kicked, and seeing the things his brother accomplish, helped him grow. A shame he had to die when his trajectory was so positive.

Shin makes a good point. None of this is normal, the Chouhei massacre wasn't normal, Mangoku's bloodthirsty power isn't normal, lots of people become war orphans and they don't go in to become genociders. Of course, what's sad is that being a war orphan IS normal. And that's what has to change...

I wonder if we'll ever know why Hakuhi did that? I guess Kanki is also needlessly cruel, but to tie people up and then bury them alive just seems... Time consuming. Wouldn't beheading them be quicker, if the goal was simply to eliminate 400k people? It must have been to instill terror in Zhao...

Ironic that the author said his worries for the anime were assuaged, since it did turn out kinda crappy. But then, authors always just seem happy to have their works animated, even when it's a poor job. If I were Oda I would be curious what Toei is doing to my series, but apparently he doesn't mind.

re-reading this, I've been reminded what an utter contemptible bastard Seikyou was. so redeeming him somewhat seems an even more daunting task.

It's nice to remember that Heki isn't bad, he's actually pretty decent. He just looks like a chump compared to Shin and the other prodigies. But he's talented enough to keep rising steadily through the ranks. I feel like, given a few decades, he could eventually rise to a position like Mougou...

@deltarayedge well put. I know everyone here really started hating him, especially for how Houken would just show up to bail him out, but when you think about it is that any different from Shin always showing up to save the day for Qin? Both sides have their incredible monsters who perform above...
