If you decide to drop your family name, there's no much the family or the king can do. That's how it always worked. Disowning your family is no different from excommunicating someone, it's not really something you can go 'no' at.

That part is just the classic 'Haunted place that suddenly never existed', their other versions in the original universe probably got the same treatment. Or there was no swap and it's just the universe itself that changed a bit because they somehow broke the train curse by managing to leave it.

Since their wages were there, either the universe itself was altered with no swap involved or they swapped places with other versions of themselves that just went through the same thing so ironically, switching universes has little to no consequences for anyone involved.
