I first read that crane story when I was less than 9 years old (it was part of bunch of stories in a picture book) and even back then I thought it was sad and not know why. This chapter is a callback from 20 year's later. I was like holy shit is she that crane from that story?

Wow that chapter 1 callback! Series progressed so slow I already forgot the first scene was was a flash forward of the basement scene. That said, the "true ending" really went off the rails to the realm of absurdity.

I thought in universe it's still less than 1 year from chapter 1 to now, so whatever age Vermouth drank (before or after studied disguise with Conan's mom) and de-aged to it couldn't have been THAT long to notice visible aging (say 20+ years). So it's even less likely she took it multiple times.
