I am always baffled by how the Japanese just insert their culture like that without finding it weird at all. Imagine a hunter-gathered story, where all of a sudden the MC starts eating Borscht like it's no big deal.

I believe I did, and the story just kept going with the idea of an unlikely, peculiar pairing. The rest of the story wasn't really all that interesting, and all I'm saying is that the start of the story was so needlessly forced that it made me stop and comment on it.

I can agree to some degree. The "origin arc" felt completely unnecessary. But it was coherent. This just came outta nowhere, it feels like a chapter is missing. Even if we want to tie it to the MC being undead, it is still very off-kilter.
