Honestly feel like that's an insanely lazy plot device. This story was never even going anywhere as it is, but it somehow managed to walk backwards completely.

Don't forget about "blocking" an attack from midair, where you do not have the proper leverage to negate any momentum. I.E: Slapping his spear against the orc lord's cleaver will only result in the spear being pushed down towards the other guy he wanted to protect.
