Of course...a "rookie" mistake, but the ambiguity of the context made the translator think she had died (even thoughit was unlikely she had died off screen).

well, it's not too old, from 2017 to be precise. I guess the author wanted to use it an older shoujo style on purpose, a BL shoujo style if you want.
