If you didn't notice (and you clearly didn't), Maki had already made many copies of the machine, and she gave them to various students. He had to stop her, one way or another. The best way was probably pretending to work together with her.

Yeah, for now Tateyama seems worse...but we don't know what Maki may do in the next chapters. There's still one volume and a half after all.

Addictive...unless you keep having nightmares like Akari's father and Uchida, though. It seems there are some strong-willed individuals like Maki who, despite using the machine, aren't addicted to it, but most of people in this story clearly are "weak".

I don't agree, but ok, I respect your opinion. Tezuka started his career making gag manga, so you will often see the same weird characters even in the most dramatic stories. It's the so-called "Tezuka star system".
