I agree that their gender is indeterminate. The narration and art have made this point several times. They sometimes appear more feminine, at others more masculine. But I don't really have a theory for this yet. The story hasn't given us much to go on.

Nah, I think it feels like a pretty natural development. Alec won over the seven princesses and beat the first level boss, so now we move on to the next (marriage) level with new challenges. I know it's rare to see actual plot development in a romance manga, but it's a good thing, trust me.
