From what I understand, 'Hero' is just a title. The MC of the original game holds the title of a Hero, but isn't the only one around.

They didn't have the same information we as readers do. If adventurers are generally a bunch of rough guys, then they would have just assumed they got a grout of the worst mannered adventurers.
