I thought he would do something clever, like breaking the guy's wand or hitting the statue, because he may not get hurt, but he can still be overpowered, so he can't stop Mash from taking away his wand or attacking the statue.
But no, he went the Mash route of just punching on until it works.
On a meta note, breaking the wand could work against every opponent and quickly get boring, so I'm glad they didn't go for that.
