I still think a certain magician is involved. Kindaichi speculated as much in an earlier chapter of this case.

Her passed away news was really on time to push him into confessing. Coincidence? A lie? Also, nice to see more returning characters here, but hey, where's that screw-loose detective Yukimura? He gave up on Kindaichi just like that? I want to see where he keeps accusing Kin, while Kin just goes on with the cases with frustation because he couldn't talk back. Eventually, a case requires the help of both and they can finally come to an understanding.. because maybe Akechi wouldn't be Kindaichi's "police hand" anymore here, just like the heroine changed (Miyuki to Hayama).

Eh, what do we know anyway. Thanks for translating.

I believe it's an oversight from the author and the editor team. They took the effort of introducing a young, hot-blooded career policeman who comes up with a wild, but sensible theory. Every amateur detective needs a police companion. They could have developed him to be the police hand for Kindaichi, now that Inspector Kenmochi has retired and cant be of help, and Akechi is too far up the hieararchy to get involved. He reminds me of the Todai graduate steoreotype that he could also serve as a comic relief.

Overall, this series has some questionable character development and editing. Most case could have been shortened to 12. Classic Kindaichi cases seldom go above that number. I have doubt about the collaboration between the writer and the editors. It seems like they aren't on the same page and haven't found their groove yet.
