Ouranos, why thank you. Let's have a good friend's chat here. You see, the truth of the matter is that if you wanted Spanish translated stuff from English. I'm your man, I do it for free, nada, zero, nothing. Free as the wind free.
But...once you add the keyword "From Japanese" then, the fantasy world of "free" becomes "something we gotta pay for, with money."
I don't know Japanese at all...I don't want to study it. I don't have time for it. I just want to read a few comic series and continue my life without learning a language I don't care about nor I will use in the future.
So what can I do about it? easy man, the Mercenary life. We live in the world of sponsoring. Put some cash on the table and I can make any manga (or anything happen really with good quality, mind you) and the money, all that sweet green will go into the pockets of two entities: The person that sell me the paper book, and the person who translate the said book. It is a real job, you know. Do you want a free house? free medical care? free services like food, housing, and entertainment? well, I can't really go to the stores and demand it, do I?
Now, "the works of others?" you mean the manga licensing world? Japan's printing industry? Japan's economy? The mangaka work? Well, if probably you haven't noticed around you. This very website and many countless aggregators and everybody that frequents these sites in the thousands that read, trade and scan manga books are bent on destroying, trampling and make the economy of the manga world to disappear. The moment you read fan scans, you already left your morale outside and you can't preach it on me, but don't feel bad about it. I was going to buy "The promised neverland" and I got it here for free. A savings of about cool 150 dollars. Now, I don't have to buy it.
But that's for a popular manga that everyone wants. I want one of my own, Can you give it to me? in exchange for nothing? I really wanna read it. But not "a bad one" (Jojo duwang, A.K.A blind idiot translation) with "good looking scans" and I want it quick before the mangaka comes up with his new work. You can laugh at me, really. Who wouldn't like to have that?
The truth of the matter is, really, My love for my series is beyond the value of money and I ended up spending more money from my pocket than I was actually expecting to pay, but it's alright. It's my hobby. Gotta put my money where my mouth is. So I made this private group that has a paid membership, deadlines, information, voting decisions, member suggestions and even though I had to pay for a Japanese translator to deliver a 200-page book script in sort of direct Japanese to English. The script itself is unusable without competent proof-reading, typesetting with good choices, quality source material, and the non-negotiable "20-hour-per-volume" manpower to do so. That's when my poor choice was, to do it all by myself. So don't do it. Don't get into scanlation.
I did it, for 15 years and over 130 books. Almost 6 to 7 thousand dollars spent, just for the Baki series. A feat, huh? I can't say I did it alone. Some people gave me good money to have a full book in English, two weeks after Japan's printed version, The bookshop got paid, the translator got paid, my many members got a new book, and I got to add my credits to it. And the blessed question came without a delay "When is the next one?"
In this day and age, people get paid to play video games, make silly videos of themselves and what have you. And I finished my full series that, unfortunately, will keep going deep into the future because manga is a business and I'm tired of just being "the one guy" that people hate because he demands membership rather than beg for help.
Don't delude yourself, every manga group asks for donations, even though they don't use direct Japanese translations. They do chinese, viet, korean, google trans and good for them.
Oh yeah, your question: Because I can deliver a book, any book you want, faster, better, reasonably priced and with a network of people that will make you (or me) avoid to pay for the full series.
Don't believe in my system, it's alright, I get to have fun posting chapters out of order and making people insane
my sick hobby
thanks for reading thus far and nice to see ya
