@GoblinGuy lol what do you even read? What does a character being 'plain' have to do with getting power-ups? Why would a character be made 'plain' on purpose just for power-ups? When has this actually ever been done?...You have no real insight into how anybody write's anything do you?

Let's see, this is a fighting manga so let's start off with some relevant examples.
Hajime no Ippo: weak average japanese kid becomes champion boxer through many asspulls and fighting move powerups. One of the most famous fighting manga in existence.
Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru: weak average japanese kid becomes karate champion, largely because they realize he's flexible and he can use that for extreme moves which I'd call a powerup.
Then we have almost the entire isekai genre. Admittedly there the powerup tends to come really early, but they all have to be almost excruciatingly average teens at first so the reader can properly self insert as them.
In a sense the same is true for most romcom manga, although there the powerup is that they become more romantically interesting over time.
Now you could have half a point if you're trying to point out "they're plain for that self insert factor, not for the powerups". You'd be dumb, though, since my comment was about powerups being the only way Japan knows how to write things. And they do partially make characters plain for that, because if you keep scaling powerful characters up further and further you get DBZ-levels of stupidity.
I could keep listing shit, but I already put too much effort in a reply to some idiot who decided to @ me over a one line comment I made two freaking years ago. I'd advise against doing that in the future, unless you want people to block you. Necrobumping is against the rules on most forums for a reason, this is as close as you can get to that for comment sections.

That doesn't sound like average that sounds like someone special. I also love how you magically skip over the entire progression of the manga you list. One second they're pissing their pants to small-time thugs the next, they're beating the strongest guys in the verse. No training. No loses.
