For an example of what caitsith mentioned, Nagasarete Airantou has a family of ninjas in it. The mother has been poisoning her children for years during meal time without telling them. I think this was used for a joke where one of the daughters wanted to cook for the male lead, but accidentally paralyzed him by including an ingredient she didn't know was poisonous but has seen her mother cook with before.
