On the gun issue and whatnot, it could be a country with gun control laws. I don't know about Korea's(?) current laws but it is entirely likely a writer will habitually transfer certain laws over due to them seeming so normal to them... Now if it was in the US and nobody was using guns I would understand the complaints much more. Also Guns could probably still be considered as better weapons against people hence the controls being placed. That said I feel like ranged weapons would normally be weaker (magic not included) than melee in a world where people are boosted like this.
