With how much the protagonist is hyping the hero and the not-so-subtle mention of him able to dual cast. Part of me believes it to be he who cursed our guy. The obvious trope being a red herring to throw us off.

But, that would be in a perfect world. It's easier to use tropes since you don't have to think about them.
