Oh my gosh this debate has been going on for two weeks already? O_O

Also, thx @RadioForrest for appreciating my evidence cause I literally spent an hour from 11:30 pm to 00:30 am at midnight, fixing all the broken spoiler tags (cause they won't layer) and typing them all down... I am great at picking my priorities, aren't I?

And yeah I agree with @v4v and @banhammer - if it's just not your thing, it'll be incredibly hard to be convinced of why you should spend precious time investing in the activity. My friend told me to watch Mob Psycho and I literally held it back until a couple weeks ago when I realized that season 2's coming next season (along with the anime of 5Toubun!!!) when I binged the whole thing despite my tightened schedule.

It's great because it avoids most of the harem tropes one usually finds in other manga. The protagonist is actually a character, not a bland cardboard cutout for the audience to project themselves onto. The heroines, while starting off as archetypes, actually move beyond being walking cliches and grow as characters.

Nino goes from hating the protagonist, to grudging respect, to being the most aggressive about her affections towards him.

Another great part is that you can see why the relationship(s) work. The protagonist and the sisters work together to overcome problems, there's no retarded drama and misunderstanding that drags on for too long and people actually communicate with each other.

It's on the level of Umi no Misaki so far, all it needs is for the author to make it a proper harem ending and give all the characters a nice epilogue.

Fair enough. Oreimo goes down in history as having one of the most offensive endings to a story I have ever seen. The author must have done it on purpose to spite the audience.

@grumblerumble I was disappointed with recent developments in Bokuben, it started off quite well but turned into a cliche fest later on. And I definitely didn't expect too much when reading 5toubun. But 5toubun actually managed to keep me hooked, I binge read all the available chapters in one night. It's just that good, definitely exceeded my expectations.

5toubun is by far, the most well-done and well-executed harem rom-com I've come acrossed. I've written a few analysis articles about the work but they were only in my mother tongue. As you said, character developments are its strongest point. The show spent a whole lot of time just to develop each of the cast. Since it already introduced 5 girls at the beginning, you won't see other love interests magically appear and get added later on as the story progresses. This is a good thing because it adds more depth to an already existing cast.

I was also amazed by how well it handled the common "childhood friend" trope.

The show introduced Rena, as she was the first girl Fuutarou met. But later on, her role was pretty much over. She bid farewell and Fuutarou lost the only memorabilia that has a clue to find out who she is when trying to save Nino. Basically, this is like saying Rena isn't as important as other sisters. The past isn't more important than the present. As contrast, the dumb Raku in Nisekoi held on to his key up to the final arc, it's dumb.

And yeah, Nino is my favorite due to her aggressiveness. Like,

How many works do we have a girl trying to confess twice? The "oh what was you saying, I didn't hear it" trope got shot down pretty hard. She made sure Fuutarou heard her clearly
.

Also, all the girls are great and well built. You can't dislike any of them.

If you enjoyed 5toubun you'll enjoy Umi no Misaki. This comes from a guy that despises most harem manga for failing utterly at what ought to make harem manga great. The cast is limited to three heroines and stays that way, the protagonist (and the plot) starts out generic but develops as a character, as do his relationships to the heroines.

Also, Rena is obviously one of the sisters, we simply don't know which one (I would have said Nino, but that's a little too obvious). You are however right when you say that the whole Seven Goodbyes arc was about the characters giving up on something from their past to forge new relationships and move ahead, and in the case of Fuutarou specifically giving up on his old love and likely reason he went from delinquent to bookworm.

And yes, it was pretty great how Nino did the exact opposite of virtually every other manga heroine. Instead of staying quiet she spells it out for Fuutarou, and knowing how socially stunted he is, she goes on the offensive, preempting all the other sisters.

My favorite seiyuu Kana Hanazawa is gonna voice Ichicka! She has voiced Kuroneko from Oreimo and Kosaki Onodera from Nisekoi, so I'm hoping this story does not follow the heartbreaking "endings" for those characters. I'm still on the Miku ship, but would love to see a harem ending.
