This is the main merit and the main "harm" of MariMite. On the one hand, this franchise made yuri popular, and on the other, it taught scriptwriters to portray completely platonic friendships as perfect fake yuri. Multiply all of the above by the tumblr audience, which cares more about slash shiping than about the actual relationship between the characters, and you get it.
