Ok, this is probably the worst chapter to me in terms of lore. This single chapter, undermined everything that was stablished about breaths so far.

Up until now, we knew that some people had a certain degree of talent which can be physically measured by the color change of the nichirin blades. From there we knew that these people could grind even more to the point of getting the marks. Great. Simple but fine.

Now we suddenly have the revelation that Yorichi was just Born with it. What? Why? Is not even about being a prodigy anymore, we are talking something physical that can be aquired through hard work. Yorichi literally never had to work for it.

I know this is a manga in which ghosts and demons are a daily thing but man, a little of consistency would be good, specially since It was fine in that sense until now.

I guess I wouldn't have minded as much If Yorichi had natural talent/was faster at learning than his brother but still had to work to develop his technique further, instead of simply being handed powers from birth.

i think this is actually a case where making a character overpowered was a smart move in terms of the writing. people usually don't like identifying with characters driven by envy, but in this case it's just so easy to understand. i love this.

thank you for the translation!

Man, so basically yorichi had ability to see-through since he was born? There must be a condition for it right? A calm mind I guess?

This chapter answered my curiosity about how these twins can survived and be Samurai in Sengoku era because I read a lot of manga like Donten no Warau, Rengoku no Warau, Waraenu Douji, etc. Twins were treated as ill-omens and usually one will be killed after they were born.

@A-tan To be fair, all the things we and the hunters learn about breaths and mark were created in generations after Yoriichi. Yoriichi was an exceptional case and from what we know, his existence may had been the cause for the mark to appear in other hunters since his generation was the first one where the mark appeared. I see nothing wrong with him being born with those skills because even in our real-world, there are prodigies who are born with talents and they can achieve great things effortlessly.

@A-tan I do know that the colour change of the nichirin blade is dependent on the style and family lineage (It was stated by chapter 9, I think, that the colour can change on depending on what your family's profession). For some, it might even occur that their blade change another colour due to adapting another sword style or creating a unique sword style.

As for the mark, it wasn't clearly stated how to achieve it. A fever is one thing but there's a lot more going on in order to receive the mark.

I sense a bigger catch for Yoriichi if his already OP in the beginning of his life. We'll see at the next few chapters why or what it is. It might even tell us why Tanjiro's ancestor enforced the practice and preservation of the breath of the sun to the future heads of his clan. I feel like there's a better reason rather than pity.

I suspect that it's the only sword style that can actually harm Muzan or possibly kill him with the need of the sun.

Shouldn't it be "monkhood" rather than "priesthood"? We are dealing with Buddhism after all.

@A-tan As ridiculous as Yoriichi is, I don't think this chapter particularly contradicted anything. It just showed us how high up the sky is.

Recall that the reason the derivative Breaths exist: though hunters may train themselves in the main Breaths (eg Water, Fire, Lightning), whether it's because of their physique or other factors, not everyone is capable of mastering the main Breaths to their limits. So while we have people like Urokodaki and Giyuu who master the Breath of Water, we have people like Kanae, Shinobu, Kanao and Iguro who use Water derivatives like Flower, Insect and Snake.
In that sense, it makes sense why the 5 main Breaths are derivatives (or "inferior versions", to use Rengoku's dad's words) of the Breath of the Sun: it's a style so overpowered that so few were able to replicate it like the original swordsmen did.

In saying that, I don't blame you for being ticked at the lore in this. Born with a Mark, access to the See-Through World and natural talent for the sword? The heavens were utterly biased towards this guy, he ticks me off too. The lore however is delicious.

Also, keep in mind that this was the guy who established the modus operandi for demon hunting (the Breaths) and probably helped the founders of the Blacksmith Village with the development of the Nichirin Blades.

If anything, I really sympathised with Michikatsu (UM1) here. His envy is his downfall, but he's the actual hardworker here.
It also makes sense now, why Rengoku's dad was so utterly incensed with the Breath of the Sun: if someone and something was so far beyond what mere mortals can strive for still failed to end Muzan, what hope do they have?

Rengoku's little brother said he had no talent to become a hunter because his blade didn't change color. He explains that you need to aquire a certain level of swordsmanship for that to happen.

While Haganezuka seems to imply there is a connection between profession and the color change, this ultimately is proven wrong the moment Tanjirou's sword changes to black instead of the red they were expecting (Also stated Haganezuka just, really wanted to see a red nichirin). So I guess that is wrong and we go back to the concept that has been hammered for a while that is "if you work hard enough and have the right predisposition you can unlock your potential", which in this case is, again, the color change of the swords that signify whether or not you can be a competent demon hunter.

Sorry If this is long, but having cleared that up, let's move to this chapter: I feel we are missing an explanation to make this sudden reveal more cohesive with the rest of the story. Yes, is true some people are naturally more capable than others (like how Kanroji is a freak of nature), but that means nothing If you don't polish those skills. And here is also the thing: A child like Yorichi had no previous training of any kind, but is somehow able to already have an ability (let's call it that) that could only be achieved through sheer power of grind(*), AND the stregnth to boot?

Again maybe I'm nipticky but It seems so bullshit they decided to present his prowess like this. Fuck training to the point you almost die, just be born with It???

What we saw so far in the story told us that, under certain circunstances, you can get the mark. So far all of those seemed to imply that you needed to really friggin push yourself to the utmost limit, kinda like breaking your own limiter? And the next condition of sorts (this time courtesy of records in Rengoku's family or smth), was that once someone unlocked it the rest would follow.

So again, It seems strange Yorichi just "has it" for the sake of being cheap and claiming "he was so op he already was born with it". Because It does feel like weak storytelling! The Kokushibo part is interesting tho, but this was just disappointing.

(*) As stated thus far up until this very chapter that kinda shat on this

I hope what I'm saying makes sense lol Anyways here is hoping this will get addressed in the future but who knows.

@A-tan, I'm sure they will try to explain how he had the mark since birth, but him having it isn't weak storytelling. Almost all characters in the story had to work their asses off to obtain a degree of mastery, but here comes a person who obtained it from the beginning isn't that unfair by any standards? It connects to how Rengoku's ancestor felt. The frustration you feel right now is the same UM1 feels, that's why it isn't weak story-telling.

Also, if Yoriichi was born with the mark from the start, it means his body was always pushing his limits. His temperature should've been way over 39 degrees and his BPM too irregular. He already could see in the see-through world so he knew which points to hit.

I consider it weak storytelling because it's taking a really cheap and contradicting way to explain something that has been hinted at (Yorichi as a character) a lot of chapters ago. It has some build up and the answer is less than impressive. I don't understand why you or anyone defend it at all because to me the idea alone that "he was pushing his limits ever since he was a fetus" is absurd. We do need an explanation of any kind (whether actual gods making him exist to create the breaths or some other convenient crap) so I hope Goutouge delivers in that front.

Also no my annoyance at bad writting is not nearly the same as the sheer envy and pure disgust Kokushibo felt nor the depressive anger Rengoku's dad left himself fall to. Please don't try to grasp at straws to just have an argument.

simple concept but captivating nonetheless.

Also I got trolled by the title, I was expecting to read about genya lmao

In terms of lore, my understanding is as such: the same way a demon(kibitsuji) was produced by an anomaly, yorichi was an anomaly. But because yorichi is in essence a human it’s possible for other humans to do the same things he can. His techniques and ability is reproduced by those with enough talent but even those with talent would be hard pressed to maintain the anomaly. I’m okay with genetic anomalies if that’s what this is, cuz all it means is just like humans can turn into demons and become supernatural entities, mankind also always had the genetic potential to enter the see through world. After all, that’s how evolution and mutations happen. Perhaps his mother’s illness has something to do with it, hence the mark on his left eye because her sickness is on her left side. But we’ll have to wait if that gets exposition.

@unnaturalsolace thank you for keep translating this, I find your team's translation clearer and easier to understand than the other team's. Also thank you for uploading the coloured version of this 😄
I can't thank you enough.

Interesting difference between the three releases: on page 15 (page 14 in the other releases), the MangaPillar translation words Kokushibou’s internal monologue in a way that implies his father making Yoriichi his successor is a fear of his—it’s worded in the future tense—but not something he’s actually heard about personally. In the Mangaplus translation, Kokushibou knows for a fact that their positions will be switched and Yoriichi will become the successor, although it hasn’t gone into effect yet from the perspective of the monologue. In the /a/nonymous translation, the succession has already been switched, and Kokushibou moved into the three-tatami room—although that directly contradicts the art, which shows him sleeping in a room much bigger than Yoriichi’s small one.

Which interpretation do you guys prefer? I like the Mangapillar one, personally, although the ambiguous wording in the Mangaplus release is probably the most accurate.
