Sigh, a smart soon-to-be-death dude, but still, "Japanese katana is superior"... oh Japan and their imagination...

If that's the face they make just from seeing Chiyozo in action they will lose their shit once they see Azumi wield her blade.

@zek777 That because Chiyozo surprise attack from the back throw the spearmen into panic, why the others got disadvantaged when against spearmen and almost wipe out if Chiyozo don't come. And Azumi is special case, she has plot armor.

@Panzercracker It is not Chiyozo I was talking about.
It was about the new guy whose name I have not bothered to remember yet. He is smart enough to know how to improve gun and stuffs but still having the delusion of katana being the best sword that all Japanese seems to have...

@zek777 I've lost count of how many times Azumi has won by chopping off her opponent fingers or go for their forearms. I know this is a manga but katanas lacking a proper guard is mindblogging.

@Ore As for sharpness, I cannot comment since I know nothing so the theory about Katana being sharp enough to cut through everything is under debate. Water can so...
But a Katana that has been swung around like that and no chip nor bend is just... There is a limit to how much iron, carbon and whatever secret ingredients they can compress into the blade. Steel with that structure and mass cannot be tougher than a bigger sword.
Sorry for the rant, my family deals with metal for construction and ship so I get weird when the topic is involved.

@sinisempi aggregators took it from the source, not mangadex. This is most probably a mistake from the uploader. @WrightHS might need to reupload the right chapter.

@Ore I remember videos of actual katana practitioners in the 80s showing off how their moves actually aim at the unarmored tendons of the thumbs and wrists before going for a killing stab to the exposed neck, not big flashy swings that cut whole limbs and armor alike.
It's really a wonder why they didn't use better hand guards when they fight like that already.

Google-sensei said, it's because a law was passed that banned certain lengths and sizes of weapons in 1600s, this included the hand guard sizes, lol.

@Rockdrop @Ore This is from memory, so it could be not accurate. There is a hilt on the Japanese sword, and exists to prevent the holder's hand from slipping forward.

The reason there is no guard is due to the mindset of the time: they're supposed to be efficient at killing. A bigger guard would prevent an efficient and quick unsheathe of the sword, which would put the opponent at an advantage. Those weapons are purely offensive, there is no thought about defense (a Klingon would be proud). Beside, parrying with that piece of bending steel wouldn't be a great idea.

The Gladius too didn't have a guard, because it wasn't needed. The weapon was somewhat secondary: they would have a pilum or another kind of spear as main weapon, defense is the scutum (big shield), and they would be equipped with great body armor.

Anyhow whenever you see a weapon and ask yourself a question, the first thing that should come to mind is: how was it used, which purpose?

@Rockdrop Welp. Talk about kicking yourself in the nuts.

@xrogaan Hence the misled notion of the katana being the best sword. There are better swords for about every situation and it is not the best "all rounder" either.

It might be the best for the particular style someone's been trained for, though.
