It might be right. He might be saying, "As long as I hold a grudge for you abandoning me as a child, I'll keep you alive." I know it's weird but japanese sayings are weird to us anyways.

In the novel, he made it so that her head is literally detachable like a dullahan, and the only thing keeping her alive in that state is the collar; take it off, and she will die like a decapitated person should.
Then, he modified the collar so that her head would (loosely) remain connected to it; his barrier magic keeps them from truly being reconnected.
