You label him as a defective healer within the first 5 pages and never explain that, only that he is trained in melee combat, which is just a f smart thing to be able to defend yourself if shit goes down. Can he not ACTUALLY heal? Can he not cure poisons for some reason?

he has had a rough life, and they (the thief and swordsman, mage girl is a recent addition to the party) are known con artists/crooks

there is a reason that comes up later which causes the guild to act in an attempt to draw in the lowest trash of the adventurers and drive away the upstanding members/citizens

IIRC thy are expecting the dungeon to overrun and destroy the city, so are trying to dive away as many of the decent people as the can and leave the crooks to die fighting the swarm, with it even fortified to keep them in

who have been abusing him and putting him down for years, even had him accepting a partial share so they can get more, but are in a situation of having lied so much they believe the lies and have forgotten why they had him in the party in the first place. They were low ranked trash before hooking up with him, with a known tendency to take on temp members and sacrifice them as distractions when things went bad, but noticed their hauls went up with him and kept him on.

@Chet31 : he can only use the most basic healing skill, and none of the more advanced ones. Hench being called a defect.

However he has trained it to a level that it does not really mater and is effectively on par with a high end healer, as well as having received training from a top rank adventurer (the woman in the back of pg 1) to develop other abilities of a different nature

@Hollow7F : Yes, but their society is a bit over focused on the number and strength of a person's skills. The party needs both a tank and a healer to replace him

and to understand the differences in what he and normal healer can do which they have forgotten thanks to lying to him so much to keep him down that they now believe their own lies

Due to extensive (and special) training his heal is not a normal heal, and can do things full healers have trouble doing

@Deunesse : he is not on par with a dedicated tank either, just the only one in the party.
