You'd think a swimming skill, even at the bottom level, would be something essential to have in an open world game with lots of water around. Even if you didn't plan to go swimming, you might always get pushed into water or fall into water from a steep cliff by accident. In a dungeon it isn't be unheard of to fall into water or perhaps swim/dive for a short period of time to reach another part of the dungeon. But then again, it does fit the MC's stubborn attitude to avoid the skill until the very moment he finds himself drowning.

Yeah. He probably uses that expression even in the game because outside of the game he doesn't want parasites and thus cooks the fish. So, he's just used to saying it, even though technically it wasn't correct this time.

Well, your both right.

自分で釣った魚は 自分の料理して 美味しく食べる それが私の 数少ないポリシーってやつでしてね ... this was the line. which I translated as "I cook my own fish and enjoy eating it, which is one of my few policies"
it could have been translated as "I prepare my own fish and enjoy eating it" the 料理して = Ryourishite is defined as ... cooking/cookery/cruisine/meal/food/dish/item on a menu/ also dealing with something/handling/administration/management

To me, a cook is .. A cook is an individual who follows established recipes to prepare food ... although Oxford dictionary goes into it like ... [intransitive, transitive] to prepare food by heating it, for example by boiling, baking or frying it

So, I could have used prepared but cook came to mind first. hehe.
