it was brought up in chapter 5 that they don't choose when they descend, and that they just have extreme hunger for humans, so it's just instincts at that point (gods have more ego to repress the hunger)

Susanoo's tactic of recruiting the MC was wrong. If you wanted him to be on your side, you should've just shown him slowly why he should be sympathetic towards your cause. Kidnapping the sister caused the opposite, even if he is sympathetic he won't join with a person who threatens or uses his loved ones as leverage.

I don't know the answer to your question, but Susanoo in Japanese stories tends to be a dumb musclehead, which leads me to believe he may not be very intelligent in the original Shinto beliefs. I like to imagine that Kenpachi Zaraki (Bleach) is based on him.
