No sane man will leave a devoted harem party for a bunch of ungrateful bastards and bitches who will just abuse him. And this chapter just confirmed the legality of polygamy in this story, so I consider that Chekhov's gun. No detail should be wasted in storytelling, so I'm pretty sure that will come to play much later on when (I assume) they all become his wives in the end.

Is that how it works? I was always under the impression it was just a status thing for the sake of succession and management of assets. Wives of nobles for political marriage to create ties (between lords/nations), manage assets, and create heirs. Concubine's were often commoners to create ties(wealthy merchants/government officials/ lower nobles), become lovers, and to create more children (spare heirs).

Slaves were less than serfs and I believe they had better status than that.

Fairly certain it was just a matter of standing. There was one main wife, and children with them had inheritance of family stuff. Concubines were other wives that had children outside of succession
