So he's from the same kingdom who supply materials to the crazy alchemist guy, maybe he himself did it, when they fall in the desert he most likely knows we're they fall and they would ended up in the town were they found the homunculus and that the alchemist will try to use them as materials, so he knows what's up.
The other thing is that he maybe hate magicians but my first theory sound much better since he is really suspicious

So this chapter overshadow a very great plot: there is a homunculus walking among them (in real world), immortal, very strong, and maybe Desir already met him (in his past life?).
