I am thinking about introducing my sister to manga, but as we all know very well, japanese comics and slightly mature themes are a bit hard to separate.

She is 8, but I think it's a little early to introduce her to the Shōnen or Josei, since some of these can include some quite inappropriate stuff for children.

That's why I'd like to have a Kodomo magazine demographic, this way I would be able to filter out all the "stronger" stuff from my little sister's account. Also, I'm aware that Kodomo titles are directed towards children, this means that such are, naturally, more interesting for the young ones.

So I think the suggested feature would make MangaDex a safer and more appealing place for our kids, if implemented.

The road to censorship is often paved with "good intentions"

Consider doing an advance search with the "content rating" filter on "safe" and possibly blocking all content ratings above safe in Settings > Blocks > Content Filter.

I don't know if beyond that (and maybe using other existing filters that you consider more appropriate) you still think there is still inappropriate content shown for your 8 yo in the search result.

Though I will point out that according to the Terms of Service point 1.5 it reads:
The Site is intended for users who are at least 13 years of age. All users who are minors in the jurisdiction in which they reside (generally under the age of 18) must have the permission of, and be directly supervised by, their parent or guardian to use the Site. If you are a minor, you must have your parent or guardian read and agree to these Terms of Service prior to you using the Site.

So if anything, MangaDex has made a clear and conscious decision to not make this website appropriate for users under the age of 13.

I don't think MangaDex intends to, or should be a place for kids.
(I was gonna quote ToS 1.5 but boursk already did it...)

For database purposes I guess it'd be useful to have this tag if it's clear-cut like the shounen/seinen difference.
MAL has it but MU doesn't seem to have it.

For your sister, I suggest you show her the manga without giving her access to the website.

Short hot take:

"WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN" is bullshit. I don't have children, I don't want children, and I don't want to self-censor in places that are clearly intended for adults because children (or people who think like children) might show up. Keep your kids out of the dimly lit smoke filled rooms and the dark alleyways, and I pledge to not be 'weird' in 'public'. But THEY'RE NOT MY CHILDREN, and I'm not babysitting them simply because their parents/teachers/guardians of the moment have abandoned that responsibility. If they decide to go play in traffic and you don't stop them, I view that as natural selection working against your poor parenting skills.

First, obligatory "Its not other people's responsibility to make sure your kids don't do something they are not supposed to." (i know you said sister but close enough). That out of the way, the biggest problem is that you are trusting a site that runs on community contributions to tag everything correctly and have roughly the same standards as you. The next issue, at least to my knowledge, is that there are no controls that would stop someone from enabling the "spicier" content they are forbidden from seeing.

Your best option would be to curate a selection of titles you have vetted and then load them into a comic/manga reader app. Its more work for you but your other option is to trust other people to do what you should be doing.
