I'm guessing that his older personality contributed heavily to how he played the piano. Now that he's calmer, those emotions are no longer present when he's playing.

Call it bittersweet if you want, I don't see how it's sad.
If he was a human he'd have grown up to be a great musician and then killed himself before he turned 30.
This way he can be a normal member of society.

And that's actually sad imo. He's essentially forced to undergo a lobotomy so that he can fit society. But that took away his uniqueness. Wouldn't it be better if they trained him to control his anger? Wouldn't it be better if his mom just tried to understand him more? Hell, would it really hurt him if he doesn't have any friends? Nothing wrong with being a loner but still enjoying yourself. Back then, the piano is his only friend but he cherished it more than anything. Now?
Sorry if it's a bit long but I just found this series and absolutely loved it. The mix of sci fi and philosophical questions are really good without being too complicated. This chapter is my favorite because of the ending. It really poses a question to us
