Ugh... In addition to my dislike for the particular bents the plots seemed to be taking, there's way too much "one of these two people that are supposedly the sameish age, looks way too much like a child, and with that in mind the other looks far too much like an adult" going around here.
I guess I should have worked that one out from the cover, in retrospect.
(Edit: I should probably know what sorts of things to watch out for from by Hoshino Lily by now, her stuff's been around since forever, but honestly the only thing by her I can ever remember anything about is Otome Youkai Zakuro. And even for that one only a few bits that have nothing to do with it's plot. Everything else just sort of drops out of my head without leaving a strong impression. :/ )

(I jest, naturally, and of course there's nothing wrong with old-ish doujins, nor slightly aging fandoms. And this author has been writing long enough that she could have made them at any point during that whole craze that she might have felt so inclined. I just snortled because "check out these NaruSasu doujins" is such a nostalgic thing to hear XD)
Though I've personally never been able to get enthusiastic about the whole realm of doujinshi stuff myself—I realize this locks me out of a large swathe of BL, but I frequently have minor problems of discomfort with having different writers write the same characters differently (even in officially sanctioned stuff, to be clear) and the doujin scene is just too full of that for my tastes.

I agree that Hoshino Lily's original BL is not the greatest and very tropey, but I did like Zakuro a lot and hope she gets back to it after her maternity leave!
I can totally respect your perspective on doujinshi/fanfic! I myself love doujinshi though, especially when I feel that it improves on the source material or uses the characters/setting more faithfully (and we all know how Naruto turned out lmao)
