The nazi soldiers weren't inhuman.

They were precisely humans willing to follow orders. And even more so, willing to forego responsability because "I was ordered to do so"

That's literally what military training essentially boils down to. Instill the "YOU. OBEY. ORDERS." mentality.

No questions, no challenge, no "my gut says", you hear open fire, you open fire. And don't worry. It's your superior's responsability then.

I don't think military has to be like that. From what I've been hearing some armies have been doing it more "humanely", like the UN or west Europe with their joint operations.

But maybe that's just propaganda, I'm no expert. My point is, armies could change their policies so they aren't synonyms for government dogs.
