Gray, Emilia and Kasha used to be in a different party with 2 more who haven't appeared yet.

The Valkyrie party was formed after Gray's first party got disbanded. This is when Gray decided to go solo.

And yes Emilia is Gray's ex, but he rather not talk about it. He described the reason they broke up was due to them taking different paths, i.e. Gray going solo while Emilia and Kasha continued to form party.
