I can buy that you need to kill the former owner, but making it a family tradition to do it like this is ridiculous.
For starters, if this is how it worked, it absolutely shouldn't be done when the heir is so young. As skilled as Absolute is, there's no way he has all the skills and knowledge his father accumulated over the years doing the work that he did. If they're gonna do this, they should at least wait until he's like 25 and in the prime of his life while his father is leaving his prime. This is the equivalent of throwing away incredibly useful talent. Halving the family's potential, even.
For another, this makes producing heirs really complicated. I doubt every single generation of family head is able to accept their death this easily, and this creates a direct incentive to kill your own kids and/or not have kids. Both of which are a major problem for a noble house.
