If those materials or potions are rare it could be exposed, remember who he is lying to, noble factions fighting for power. These are groups who would actually investigate, and a half baked lie would get exposed. Its just such a unnecessary lie is the thing.

But that's the point, prove the goddes intervention is easy since they are with one, it's just a matter of asking her (probably), but i agree that they kinda went too far on this matter.

That would be even worse. Revealing a goddess to the nobles would be just paining a huge target on them and would invite so much trouble. Absolutely not worth it just to get away with exaggerating a situation.
